As a tester you understand the basic principles of Application Development, and you are capable of translating requirements into tests. You communicate in clear terms with stakeholders, such as architects, business people and end users. You will work in a test team and report to the test manager.

You are familiar with all different forms of testing, such as unit, functional, integration and performance testing. You have some experience with tools to automate tests and can perform regression on their test set. As a tester you verify test coverage and prioritize test work. Experience with test tools such as JUnit, JMeter, FitNesse, and Mercury, Rational or Compuware test suites and shell scripting are a definite plus.

Ideally you have some (Java) programming experience such that they can communicate easily with developers. Testers will closely cooperate with developers and system administrators.
You are capable of maintaining a test environment and can demonstrate tested work to stakeholders if necessary.

You are precise and well organized. You create test plans on the basis of functional and technical requirement documents, but you are proactive as well in helping determining tests for cases that have not been identified yet.
Ideally you have experience will testing methodologies such as TMAP. Software testers document their work and will provide feedback concerning the functional and technical requirements.
